How we measure it

How the cameras are counted and compared with their own typical, and where incidents, closures and the weather come from.

We pull a fresh image from each City of Calgary traffic camera every minute and count the cars, trucks and buses in view with a computer-vision model. Counts are averaged into 5-minute windows. Each camera is compared with what it typically shows at this hour on this weekday over the trailing 8 weeks: busy means clearly above that, at least 15% and 3 vehicles more in view; heavy means about two standard deviations, 30% and 5 vehicles more. We count vehicles in view (density), not vehicles per hour, so a jam shows up as more vehicles. Incidents and lane closures come from the City’s live feeds; the weather from Environment and Climate Change Canada; road names and places from OpenStreetMap contributors.
